TOMORROW NITE

Jake The Snake, leukemia survivor, skates out onto the ice with his heroes The NY Rangers, to sing the National Anthem with them.

Jake, together with his twin brother and best friend, Chase, overcame leukemia a few years ago. Chase The Ace was a perfect bone marrow match and saved the day.

Their story and my emails with their father Rob, inspired my book for heart and soul givers.

I am confident that Jake will skate "DAMSTRONG!"

SORRY

to all who feared the worst for me, but I was away and did not have access to the internet. Yes, I know I could have gone to Starbucks but i don't drink coffee. Or I could have gone to McDonald's but I try not to eat that stuff or any other wifi friendly fast food junk.

In any event, I am back and hoping your days I missed have gone well and and your weekend goes even better.

There is a man fighting leukemia whose wife contacted me and I ask that you send prayers in Ron's direction at MSK.

YEARS AGO I SAID

It is not paranoid to be paranoid these days.

Sad to say, now more than ever that is true.

That said, let us hold onto hope and optimism, while being cautious and watching our backs. It is a cakewalk and balancing act between being positive and proactive and being protective.

And no, we don't have to wear a holster and gun just yet, but there are times it is a scary, but tempting option.

WORDS WORTH READING

The sign says, "A candle does not lose anything by lighting another candle."

Short, sweet and to the point. Let us each be that candle, lighting the way for others following behind.

A QUOTE WORTH READING

You can't do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth.

—Evan Esar

TEXTING WHILE DRIVING

should be against the law for obvious reasons.

But for political reasons it will be up for approval in the Florida Legislature again—for the fifth time. This despite texting while driving being equated to driving blind for 5 seconds or driving after 4 beers. It is also about 6 times more likely to cause an accident than driving drunk.

Florida is only one of five states that do not ban texting while driving.  Isn't it time we come into the 21st century?

Please text your legislators—just not while you are behind the wheel!

Tele-Tickets!

I haven't had a driving ticket in over 40 years.  A while ago, a video camera said I jumped a light. I said bs and had an attorney defend me. We lost. I now have to pay $190.

First of all, I believe these cameras are unconstitutional. Second, we all know that machines do err. Third, I have noticed that traffic lights are NOT all created equal and some give fair warning and some make you stop on a dime.

The latter had me riled all rainy day today. I kept slamming on my brakes to avoid another ticket when the light quickly turned yellow, at the risk of skidding and being part of an accident.

Though I love technologies benefits, I do not like when it is used against the average citizen—especially me.

Big brother is watching and doesn't always play fair. And we have little to no recourse. I think I'm gonna sit right down and write somebody a letter, but as my grandma would say "gournish helfin." It will not help. After all, our great law people, can't even pass a law regarding texting while driving, but they will nail you and me over a fraction of a second.

More about that next week.

AS MY WIFE CAN ATTEST

I have never been a great fan of V day. It has always felt a bit contrived, a Hallmark and other vendor moment, and a national "love" day that disappears all too rapidly. The latter can amount to little more than buying some flowers, a card, or chocolates and be done with it rather routinely and matter of factly!

In the  February Parklander Magazine, I wrote an article called "Making Everyday Valentine's Day." That, to me, holds much more meaning.

So, I hope your V day was pleasant, warm, and loving. Now keep it going forward the other 364 days of the year! If you do, you won't have to buy a card in 2014. You will have made a beautiful one all year long!

IT IS A POWERFUL FOOTNOTE TO OUR DEMOCRACY

and commitment to equality that the face of the Democratic Party is African American and the face of the Republican Party is Hispanic.

Now, if we could all just work together no matter what the party, and move our country forward, that would be huge indeed.

SO I FIBBED

when I said that there would be no more politico comments. But there is a much bigger fibber than me.

For those local you are aware of the Atkins-Grad disaster in Tamarac. Patte Atkins-Grad is a (was a hopefully soon) City Commissioner in Tamarac Fl. She was indicted on accepting bribes from real estate developers to vote on approving their plans, which she did. Though the briber's testified against her, she was found innocent, reinstated in her position by the Governor, and paid all back monies due, including her defense attorney's fees.

Her defense was that she was "incompetent but not corrupt" and didn't understand the implications of their payoffs. DUH!!

The good news is that a group of devoted Tamarac residents have collected enough signatures to oust her from her commission chair and into an assisted living facility or wherever people who don't know the difference between a bribe and a gift go.

Frankly, I think they go to Hell, but that is a whole nother story.

ONE MALE'S OPINION ON THE MAIL

I don't think anyone will fret that Saturday's mail will soon be a thing of the past. I mean like 80% of my snail mail is junk mail anyway.

However, this latest change reminds us that our new world order has impacted so many areas. Where have all the travel agents gone? I recently canceled my yellow page ad realizing what a waste it was. Despite the proliferation of brick and mortar banks, so much is now done over the net, not to mention that book stores have bit the dust. Who would have thunk that I tunes is an 8 billion dollar annual business? And did anyone of my generation ever imagine Facetime, Skype, Texts, etc.

The face of the world has changed so much. Our communication is so much more efficient. Yet people still don't respond to my emails.  I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter! Not sure it will be delivered—especially on a Saturday!

APPROPOS OF YESTERDAYS COMMENT

here is a quote from Time Magazine: " Is Washington so polarized and dysfunctional that it will not be able to find a way to pass any compromise package on these—or other—issues?"

This to me is unacceptable and I can't imagine anyone—Dem or GOP—who sees this as an appropriate way to govern and guide our strong nation. I think politicians should be voted for who promote compromise and cooperation and those who only want divisiveness and political exploitation need to get the boot.

Okay! No more political blogs.

TIRED

of reading articles explaining, defending or debasing the political climate in the USofA.

We need to be a team united for the common good of the common person whatever the party.

In fact, a party suggests a happy celebration, not a country divided unto itself. Let us celebrate that we all want the same things for our country—peace, harmony, equity, and you fill in the blank________.

Frankly, Marco is not the solution, but just a small part of the answer.

SUNNY SKIES BEGET SUNNY MINDS

As the North East braces for "the worst blizzard in 100 years" following  the worst hurricane there, let us be grateful for the wonderful weather we enjoy for free.

South Florida certainly has its issues at times, but as far as the weather in winter is concerned, we who live here are very fortunate indeed!

This said as my wife is being snowed in in NYC! Maybe when she returns she will dislike Ft. Lauderdale less. Then again, maybe not!

Have a peaceful weekend.

WORDS WORTH READING

Gratitude is the memory of the heart.

Don't know who said that, but ain't that the truth.

Make this week— gratitude week— and reflect from your heart about all that you have for which to be thankful, despite the challenges and difficulties.

WELCOME TO BOCA

land of opportunity and opportunism!

So my friend told me her purse was stolen from her car when she was shopping at Publix there. I assumed it was a smash and grab. NOOO!!

She put her groceries in the car along with her pocketbook. She went to put the cart in the space provided rather than just leave it there. In the brief moments she was gone someone opened her car door and grabbed her purse so fast that she did not see anything wrong.

Wasn't till she got in her car that she noticed her purse was missing.

Moral 1: Leave the cart and head for the hills!

Moral 2: Return the cart to its proper place after you have used your key pad to lock the doors!

Moral 3: Those out there aren't always good people!

Which is why, even when I go for gas, I lock my doors.

Watch your back and your car doors.

Bye for Now,
