REALISTIC OPTIMISM REVISITED

Yesterday I made reference to the underlying philosophy of this blog--realistic optimism. I believe it is a much needed perspective for our most challenging times.

Last week I received a challenging email. It basically said we need to practice realistic negativism. It pointed out all the flaws and flies in our world from oil spills to dirty pols to Lady Gaga to the economic disasters and wall street fat cats as well as the terrorists among us. It went on and on in that way.

When I finished reading it that I needed a dose of realistic optimism more than ever. If we go with the negative flow it takes us down into the sewer of life. Floating with the flotsam is fraught with despair and depression. Embracing the serenity prayer frees us from looking too closely at the messes and instead focusing on that which is beautiful, pure, kind, loving and warm.

Short of taking our life, all of those previously mentioned cannot take away from us a sunset, a babies gurgling giggle, embracing someone we love, a view of the ocean or a walk in the park or the joy of being helpful to another person.

I am realistically optimistic I can continue to enjoy all of those and more for a long time to come. I hope you are too!

Do something special, small as it might be, for yourself today. Just cause you deserve it!

Bye For Now,

Bill

  1. Maybe the negative reader was complaining as so of TV and media turn things into a circus, it should be made clear that the circus was already there, and that TV and the media merely demonstrate that not all performers are well trained.

I run as fast as I can from folks who talk like your nasty gram person. Man, does that speak to why people would benefit from changing/ modifying their perspectives or what?
